Amtrak cancels dc to philadelphia trains

A major disruption hit Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor this morning after a track closure between Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., caused by a derailment involving one of Amtrak’s rail partners.

According to the Amtrak Northeast social media feed, the track shutdown occurred due to “disabled equipment from one of our rail partners.” The source was later confirmed to be a Norfolk Southern derailment that happened at 12:05 a.m., involving one locomotive and three empty railcars.

The good news? Norfolk Southern has confirmed via email that there were no injuries, and all the equipment was re-railed successfully.

Restoration Update:
Amtrak service was restored by 8:30 a.m. ET, but not without consequences — multiple train cancellations followed due to the overnight disruption.

Cancelled Trains:

  • Northeast Regional No. 66 (Roanoke to New York)
  • Northeast Regionals Nos. 111 and 181 (Philadelphia ⇌ Washington)
  • Northeast Regionals Nos. 130 and 170 (Washington ⇌ Philadelphia)
  • Acela Express No. 2152 (Washington to Philadelphia), and Nos. 2150 and 2154 (Washington to New York)
  • Acela No. 2107 and Northeast Regional No. 151 (complete route cancellations)

Weather Alert:
Heat is also playing spoilsport today. Amtrak has implemented heat restrictions between Rhinecliff and Schenectady, New York, along the Empire Service route. Expect delays from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., and possibly more across the Northeast as the day progresses.
On Sunday, similar heat restrictions caused delays of up to 20 minutes.

If you’re traveling on Amtrak today, keep checking for real-time updates and be prepared for possible delays or rescheduling.
